The Fugees is a three person hip hop band that started to become popular in the mid 1990's. This band was made up of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras Michael who are all rappers, singers, and producers. The came out with two albums one in 1996 called, The Score, which won a Grammy Award in 1997 for Best Rap Album. In 2007, MTV called the Fugees the ninth best hip hop group of all time.
Ready or Not[]
The song Ready or Not was released August 29, 1996 in the album called, The Score. This song was a minor hit in the United States but a major hit in Europe especially the United Kingdom and Iceland where it remained in the top charts for abut two weeks. The song was inspired by Enya's song called Boadicea from her album Enya which was produced in 1987. The Fugees incorporated some of the same lyrics in their song Ready or Not without asking Enya for permission. After Enya heard the song she fought the Fugees and got substantial royalties from the song.
Video[]
This music video for the Fugees hit song Ready or Not had a lot of props such as helicopters, sharks, explosions, and chase scenes. All of these props together came up for a price tag of around 1.3 million dollars. However, this clearly paid off with over one hundred million views and selling the CD's for sixteen dollars a piece.
Thoughts and Reviews[]
I think there is a lot going on in this music video. At the beginning of the video there are helicopters and explosions and unnecessary props and scenes that I think do not need to be in this music video. These scenes do not even make sense along with song. If there was less usage of these scenes and props I think that the Fugees could have made a lot more money because they would not have spent it all on the video. In my point of view, I prefer music videos that are simple or scenes that go along with the lyrics of the song. However, in the hip hop era music videos like these were the style. Everyone in this era dressed how the Fugees are dressed in the music video and liked having a lot of things going on at once. Therefore, if I was a fan of the hip hop era I might like video more.
