Childhood[]
Sid was born on May 10, 1957 in Lewisham, England. His mother was a high school dropout, who had him with a guardsman and semi-professional trombone player. Shortly after his birth, his father left. When he was eight, his mother married a man named Christopher, but he died of cancer 6 months later. Sid met John Lydon, another member of the sex pistols in 1973. They would play Alice Cooper covers on the street for money, and people would pay them to stop.
The Sex Pistols[]
After the leaving of Glen Matlock from the Sex Pistols, Sid took up the vacant bassist position. He was primarily chosen for his personality, and was not able to play the bass at first.
Around this time, Sid became heavily addicted to heroin, and was confined to a hospital. His girlfriend, Nancy Spungen visited him often, although she was the one who originally supplied him with the heroin.
In 1978, The sex pistol went on their infamous US tour. It lasted only two week due to several incidents. At one show, during a heroin withdraw, Sid carved "gimme a fix" into his chest with a razor. at another, He beat an audience member with his bass. after a concert in San Francisco, Sid decided to go on a solo career, but it was short lived
Death and legacy[]
On October 11th, 1978, Sid killed his girlfriend with a knife during a drug binge. He awoke the next day confused. He was arrested for 10 days before being released, at which time he attempted suicide. He was hospitalized again, at which time he attempted a second suicide. he was charged with assault in an unrelated indecent in December, and after a 55 day detoxification, he overdosed on heroin at a party. It is unclear whether he accidentally overdosed or committed suicide.
In 1986, a movie was made about him called 'Sid and Nancy' with Gary Oldman playing him. His nihilistic attitude and self destructive behavior is remembered by fans as his trademark.
